A piece of cake

Yesterday morning Orangeboy was nibbling his breakfast and decided to comment, "I wish life was easy."

His father-figure and I chuckled. I think his life is fairly easy. He has a good home, family, a good school with classmates who don't tease him, grandparents who try to understand him and give him his favorite fruits, etc.

Then he added, "Easy as a piece of cake."

Ok, so now I think he is just trying out one of those "sayings" that he's heard and trying to figure out exactly what it means and how to use it. He's pretty good at reasoning these things out. He doesn't sort of automatically pick up on figures of speech like most of us seem to. He has to work on it awhile, but he does really well - and he's getting better and better at it. Like I've said, he's brilliant.
Anyway, I decided to play along by testing and confusing him - being the sweet, nurturing mother that I am.

I asked, "So you want life to be like an ACTUAL piece of cake? You want to eat it, and be done with it, and go to heaven?"

He says, "HUH? You mean real cake?"
He looks confused a minute, but then grins slightly like he gets my joke.
Then he says, "Sure, if it was peanut butter and jelly cake."

"PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY CAKE?!? Life can't be peanut butter and jelly cake. I've never heard of such and you know your brother is allergic."

He laughed.

A developing sense of humor is a beautiful thing.

Firstly, peanut butter and jelly cake is BRILLIANT! I would eat it until I burst.

Secondly, My boy loves street names. When we are riding around town he will tell me the name of the street we are crossing when he sees the sign.

He has lately taken to telling fibs. If he sees a sign that says Clark, for instance, he will say, "Look Daddy, it says Clinton!" I say, "No, it says Clark," and he responds with, "It says CLINTON, Daddy!"

We will go through this a few times before I give up and say, "Okay, it says Clinton," at which point he will say, "Noooo, it says CLARK, Daddy!"

This kind of daily conversation has made me question the possibility of Bugs Bunny being an ancestor. (On his mother's side, of course!)

  2. That's great! Bugs Bunny as his mother's great, great uncle.

  3. Indeed. It is a beautiful thing.

I absolutely ADORE the sneer of derision that plays across my son's face when he knows he's made a funny.
